Adelphi to Host Pulitzer Prize Nominee Steven Pinker as Part of Its Fall Cultural Calendar

Garden City, NY
October 27 2003

Pulitzer Prize nominee Steven Pinker will speak on his book, The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature, as the guest lecturer in Adelphi University's Lindemann Lecture in Human Development on November 10, 2003 at 7:00 PM in the school's Ruth S. Harley University Center at 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The lecture, "The Blank Slate," is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

In his highly regarded work, The Blank Slate, Dr. Pinker makes provocative arguments about the basis of human behavior and challenges the popular, centuries-old concept that we are all born as blank slates. His examination of the nature vs. nuture debate has catapulted him to the forefront of the public discussion about human nature and the development of the human mind. The book was a finalist for the 2003 Pultizer Prize in General Non-Fiction and a winner of two American Psychological Association Awards in 2003—the Eleanor Maccoby Book Award, Division of Developmental Psychology and the William James Book Prize, Division of General Psychology.

Dr. Pinker received his B.A. at McGill University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is currently the Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University.

This event is being co-sponsored by Adelphi University's International Initiative Committee (IIC) which is a campus-wide group of faculty, administrators, and students charged with infusing courses and campus events with international content. Through the IIC, the University offers dynamic programs so students, faculty, and the public have the opportunity to hear first-hand, global perspectives on issues of international concern.

While free and open to the public, tickets will be required. Free tickets, available on a first-come, first-served basis, must be picked up in advance at the PantherTainment booth located on the ground floor of the Ruth S. Harley University Center. For more information about tickets, please call 516.877.3616
