First Annual Conference on Gerontology Hosted by Adelphi University–Parker Jewish Institute Centers on Gerontological Care

Partnership Addresses Critical Issues in Growing Field

The Adelphi University–Parker Jewish Institute Centers for Gerontological Care (CGC) will host its first Annual Conference on Gerontology, "Academic and Clinical Frontiers in Gerontology," on November 13, 2003 at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY and November 14, 2003 at Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation in New Hyde Park, NY. Designed for area professionals and students involved in elder care, the conference will address important topics in the growing field of gerontology, including New York State’s legislative agenda on aging, legal and ethical issues in elder care, medical problems of the elderly, and Alzheimer’s research and respite.

The conference is the first public program offered by the CGC, a pioneering clinical-academic partnership forged between Adelphi University and Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation. Started with generous assistance and support from New York State Senator Michael Balboni and the New York State Department of Health, the CGC serves as a model for a community-based alliance in caring for seniors and their caregivers at all points in the health continuum.

Topics on the first day of the conference at Adelphi University will center on wellness in elder care and aging. Day two of the conference at Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation will address issues of illness in the elderly.

Day 1 - November 13, 2003:
    Keynote Address by Gloria Ramsey, director, Division of Nursing Program in Bioethics at New York University

    The Honorable Michael Balboni, New York State Senator and member of the Senate committees for aging, children and families, higher education, and insurance

    Francine Conway, assistant professor, Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Adelphi University

    Sharon Mullon, commissioner, Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs

    Philip Rozario, assistant professor, Adelphi University School of Social Work
Day 2 - November 14, 2003:
    Keynote Address by Dr. Conn Foley, chairman, Department of Medicine, and Nerken Chair in Geriatric Medicine, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation; associate professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine

    Erica L. Kathryn, associate professor and director of research and grants, Adelphi University School of Nursing; interim executive director, Adelphi University–Parker Jewish Institute Centers for Gerontological Care

    Michael Rosenblut, acting chief executive officer, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation

    Martha Wolf, manager, Granat Alzheimer Center, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation

    Gisele Wolf-Klein, director of medical education, training, and research, and physician-in-charge of the Community Health Center, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation; associate professor of medicine on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; chief of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s Division of Geriatric Medicine.
