"Pathways to Teaching" Scholarship Addresses Math and Science Teacher Shortage

Garden City, NY
December 11 2003

As part of its effort to address the shortage of qualified math and science teachers in area schools, Adelphi University, in partnership with Nassau Community College, the Roosevelt Union Free School District, and the Westbury Union Free School District, has launched "Pathways to Teaching," a full tuition scholarship for college students who are considering teaching secondary mathematics or science. The fundamental mission of "Pathways to Teaching" is to increase the quantity of highly qualified secondary mathematics and science teachers working in school districts which have been identified as high need and to develop a model for preparing new teachers for this environment.

"There has been a devastating lack of qualified math and science teachers in many areas of Long Island," said Dr. Elaine Sands, dean, Adelphi University School of Education. "Adelphi is pleased to work with Nassau Community College and both the Westbury and Roosevelt Union Free School Districts to increase the number of qualified teachers in areas of need and to take part in the ongoing effort to improve education throughout our school districts."

This scholarship is available to college students who have junior standing or higher and have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better. Students must also have completed at least 15 credits in their area of certification. Applications are currently being accepted and should be submitted as soon as possible. Admission is based on a completed application form, an application essay, a letter of recommendation, and a personal interview.
