Adelphi University Welcomes Writer Donald Everett Axinn on Tuesday, March 2, 2004

"Poetry, Fiction, and the Translation into Film"

Donald Everett Axinn will speak at Adelphi University on March 2, 2004 at 5:30 PM in the school's Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The lecture, "Poetry, Fiction, and the Translation into Film" is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow his lecture.

Spin, one of Axinn's recent novels was adapted into a screenplay by writer James Redford. Spin is a bittersweet coming-of-age tale set in the 1950's reveals the emotional life of an orphaned boy overcoming the loss of his parents through his passion for flying and his love for a local Mexican-American girl. In an interview at Middlebury College, Redford said that he was drawn to the novel because, "It dares to explore complex relationships in a subtle way and even more daring without irony." Donald Axinn will read excerpts from his collection of poems, the novel Spin, as well as show clips from the movie version. Newsday has reported, "His poetry can be playful, musical, reflective, probing, idealistic, sometimes darkened by a sense of injustice and alienation, or gleaming with wonder and surprise."

Donald Axinn is the author of seven volumes of poetry. His articles and essays have been published in The New York Times, Newsday, and The Long Island Quarterly. He has published a book of poems, Changes a Curved Equation, and three novels, Spin, The Ego Makers, and Allan, Burning. Axinn has read his poetry before the U.S. Library of Congress, the United Nations, and in Russia. In 2003, he was honored by the Long Island Association with the Harry Chapin Humanitarian of the Year Award. Axinn is active in several literary organizations, including the Academy of American Poets, Pen American Center and Poets House. Donald Axinn received an honorary degree from Adelphi University in 2003.
