Adelphi University's 109th Commencement exercise will be held Sunday, May 15, 2005, at 10:00 AM in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY. The University will confirm more than 2,300 graduates at the associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels from the institution's schools and colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the School of Business, ABLE program, the School of Education, and Honors College. The ceremony for doctoral candidates will be held at 4:30 PM on Saturday, May 14, 2005 in the University's Olmsted Theatre, 1 South Ave, Garden City, NY. Adelphi President Robert A. Scott will deliver Sunday's Commencement address.
Sunday's Commencement will begin with the academic procession, which includes members of the Board of Trustees, University President Robert A. Scott, the honorees, and graduates. During the program, Board Chairman Steven N. Fischer and Dr. Scott will bestow honorary degrees to this year's recipients:
Also receiving recognition during Commencement will be Jonathan Larson, who will posthumously receive the Ruth S. Harley Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.
Following the presentation of the honorary degrees and awards, Dr. Robert A. Scott will deliver the Commencement address. Since his appointment as Adelphi's ninth president in July 2000, Dr. Scott has built on the University's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education and continues to link the liberal arts and sciences with professional programs. Under his leadership, enrollment (full-time equivalent) has grown by 40 percent since September 2000, and more than 100 new faculty have been hired over the past three years to support this increase. A highly published author, community leader, and social justice advocate, Dr. Scott is one of the few people ever to hold all three top positions in American higher education: head of an independent university, a public institution, and a state higher education coordinating board.
