Adelphi University School of Nursing Hosts First Annual Nursing Leadership and Research Conference

Recognized leaders in the health care field, clinical practitioners, educational professionals, Adelphi faculty, administrators, and students attended the First Annual Leadership and Research Conference hosted by the Adelphi University School of Nursing and the Alpha Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau (International Nursing Honor Society) on May 13, 2005. The event included guest speakers, small group discussions, poster and panel presentations, and exhibits. The purpose of the event was to examine issues of leadership as they relate to academia and nursing service and promote further research.
Dr. Patrick Coonan, dean and professor of the Adelphi School of Nursing, delivered the Keynote Address. He spoke about developing new nursing leaders, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing those in today's leadership positions. He encouraged participants to become visionaries and create new practices and programs to shape the future of the nation's health care system.
Other highlights of the day included a presentation by Dr. Judith Ackerhalt, associate professor in the Adelphi School of Nursing; Charles E. Cal, assistant director of quality management at North Shore-Long IslandJewish Health System; and Patricia Hogan, senior vice president of nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital. Adelphi President Robert A. Scott presented a certificate to New York State Senator Kemp Hannon for his steadfast support for Adelphi and his proactive health care initiatives.
Conference sponsors included Alpha Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, New York Organization of Nurse Executives: Greater New York Nassau Suffolk Region, Nursing Spectrum, Nurses Association of the Counties of Long Island, Advance for Nurses, Lloyd Staffing, Laerdal, United States Navy Health Team, and the Adelphi nursing student organization S.N.A.P. Dr. Bonnie Ewing, assistant professor in the Adelphi School of Nursing and Charles E. Cal, assistant director of quality management at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and adjunct professor in the Adelphi School of Nursing served as Conference Co-Chairs.
