Adelphi University Launches M.F.A. in Creative Writing

Garden City, NY
August 1, 2005

Adelphi University College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that it will offer a new Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in fall 2006. This highly anticipated program will offer a specialization in playwriting, as well as specializations in fiction and poetry.
"Adelphi's M.F.A. in creative writing will tap the talents of our highly accomplished and prize-winning literature and creative writing faculty," said Jennifer Fleischner, chair of the Department of English. "Students will benefit from rigorous coursework and the close mentoring that are the hallmarks of an Adelphi education."
Students in the 37-credit program have the opportunity to combine creative writing workshops with courses in literature, language, and theory. They will also work closely with distinguished faculty members, including four recently hired creative writers: novelists Imraan Coovadia and Martha Cooley and playwrights Kermit Frazier and Anton Dudley. The program will be directed by Adelphi faculty member and noted poet Judith Baumel.
In addition to coursework and workshops, the program will incorporate a unique professional development practicum, which will introduce students to the practical aspects of being a writer, including securing an agent, preparing a manuscript for submission, and obtaining legal advice.
The program will also host visiting writers and poets, and will hold readings at Adelphi's Garden City campus and its Manhattan Center.
For more information on the program and how to apply, visit the M.F.A. in Creative Writing Web site or contact Professor Judith Baumel by phone at 516.877.4020 or email baumel@adelphi.edu.
