Adelphi University Launches Master's Degree Program in Emergency Nursing and Disaster Management—First in New York State

Garden City, NY
September 22, 2005

Catastrophic disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and recent terrorist attacks, have demonstrated the urgent need for healthcare professionals to be prepared, respond quickly, and function under extreme pressure. To address this need, Adelphi University School of Nursing is launching a new master's degree program in emergency nursing and disaster management in spring 2006. The University is the first in New York State to offer a master's degree program in this specialization.

Nursing students in the 39-credit program will study various types of disasters; learn how to identify healthcare consequences of natural and manmade disasters, including chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks; develop and manage a disaster plan; deliver and evaluate an emergency management training; implement a community based disaster program; deliver care and manage a staff during a disaster; and provide physiological and psychological nursing care to victims. In addition to the coursework, students will be expected to complete work in the field, at such places as the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management.

Students will work with outstanding faculty, including program director Dr. Kristine Qureshi, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, a nationally recognized expert in emergency nursing and disaster management. Prior to joining Adelphi's faculty in 2004, she was the program director and investigator for the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. Dr. Qureshi is a noted researcher and author on health care system disaster preparedness and is currently conducting disaster research through the Adelphi University School of Nursing.

For more information about the master's degree program and how to apply, contact Dr. Kristine Qureshi at 516.877.4568.
