Brian D. McAuley '61 to Receive Honorary Degree from Adelphi University

Brian D. McAuley '61, co-founder and former president and CEO of Nextel Communications, Inc., the national wireless telephone service, will receive an honorary degree from Adelphi University at the 110th Commencement on May 22, 2006. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY.

Mr. McAuley is a telecommunications expert and an entrepreneur who has used his expertise in finance and strategy to develop successful start-up ventures. Upon leaving Nextel, he joined Imagine Tile, a custom tile manufacturer, where he served as chairman, with his son Christian as president. Imagine Tile holds a U.S. patent for glazed ceramic floor tiles with high-resolution images – everything from sparkling water to the mosaic floors of 14th century Venetian cathedrals.

Mr. McAuley then served as president and chief executive officer of NeoWorld Communications, Inc., a wireless telecommunications company, from 1999 until the sale of that company to Nextel in 2003. He is presently chairman of Pacific Data Vision, a provider of software applications to for mobile communications companies, and is on the board of directors of United Rentals in Connecticut, the largest equipment rental company in the world.

As accomplished as Mr. McAuley is in business, he devotes an extraordinary amount of time to the community. Since 1995, he has been a member of the board of directors of Covenant House, a national adolescent care agency, helping homeless, runaway and at-risk youths. Serving on the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Newark, he is chairman of its Endowment Fund Committee and a member of its Investment and Audit Committees. He received the Archbishop Peter L. Gerety award for his support of the Scholarship Fund of Inner City Children, and he was recently honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the Archdiocese of Newark at the Archbishop's Gala.

Mr. McAuley holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Adelphi University. He and his wife Jane live in New Jersey and have four children, Beth, Christian, Tricia, and Mary.

Adelphi University will confirm more than 2,600 graduates at the associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels at its Commencement exercises. New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver the Commencement Address. Honorary degrees will also be given to Senator Clinton and Lilo Leeds, co-founder of the Institute for Student Achievement, Inc.
