Adelphi University Launches Ph.D. Program in Nursing
Garden City, NY
June 8, 2006

With approval from the New York State Education Department, Adelphi University will offer a doctoral program in nursing beginning in fall 2006. Adelphi's program is the only doctoral nursing program on Long Island.
"Providing students with doctoral education fits with the Adelphi School of Nursing's mission to prepare nurses to be leaders in the field," says Adelphi University School of Nursing Dean Patrick R. Coonan.
The innovative 54-credit program is designed to build upon a master's degree in nursing and focuses on nursing science and research. The program also includes courses in nursing education to address the national shortage of nursing faculty who have a doctorate degree. In addition to course work, students will be expected to complete a dissertation on a topic of significance to nursing.
The Adelphi University School of Nursing offers both full-time and part-time doctoral study. By offering courses primarily on Fridays, the program provides a convenient format for students to attend classes, limit their travel time, benefit from peer support, and maximize study time.
In preparation for offering this program, School of Nursing Dean Patrick R.Coonan has recently hired several nationally recognized experts in areas such as health policy, informatics, and qualitative research, adding to an already first-rate, research-oriented faculty.
"Adelphi University remains committed to preparing doctorally educated leaders in crucial healthcare fields," says Adelphi University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Marcia G. Welsh. "In the last five years, we have seen the School of Nursing enrollment grow by over 200 percent. The doctoral program in nursing is another way for the University to attract and retain highly talented students for the nursing profession."
