Schoenfeld Over $200,000 for Cancer Research

Adelphi University Assistant Professor Alan Schoenfeld was awarded a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health. He will receive $208,410 in grant funding over the next three years to study von Hipple-Lindau (VHL) disease, a rare, genetic disorder characterized by the abnormal growth of tumors in certain parts of the body. His research will focus on mutations in the VHL gene that lead to cancerous tumors. In addition, the grant will cover one undergraduate and graduate student to assist in the research.

Dr. Schoenfeld, who specializes in cancer genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry began teaching in the biology department at Adelphi in 2004. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. Prior to his grant from the National Institutes of Health, he investigated the BRCA2 gene, one of two genes known to be responsible for hereditary breast cancer. He has received postdoctoral fellowships from the New York State Department of Health and United States Army Breast Cancer Research Program.

Dr. Schoenfeld holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University and a B.S. from State University of New York at Stony Brook.
