Adelphi University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Marcia G. Welsh is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Stepniak to the position of Associate Dean of Performing Arts.

Mr. Stepniak is an accomplished musician with more than 12 years of experience in higher education, which includes teaching, program development, and academic affairs. He served as special assistant to the provost at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. Prior to accepting his Adelphi appointment, he was an associate professor of music at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. His achievements at Columbia Union College include developing a strong music curriculum, coordinating summer academic programs, hosting distinguished musicians to perform on campus, and being selected as the youngest ever faculty representative to the board of trustees.

Mr. Stepniak has enjoyed a wide spectrum of professional successes. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed frequently with the Mendelssohn Piano Trio, as well as with the National Philharmonic String Quartet, the Contemporary Music Forum, and the Razumovsky String Quartet. In addition to performing in major concert halls and venues in 11 countries, he has been featured on National Public Radio, recorded for Centaur Records, and collaborated with various leading chamber musicians. He received two prestigious awards from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, the Presidential Entering Award (1999) and the Spencer Fellowship (2000).

He holds an M.A. in music performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University (where he won the Sidney Friedberg Prize and served as principal violist of the Peabody Symphony), an M.A. in music history and literature from Northwestern University, an M.A. in violin performance from New England Conservatory (where he was leader of the Honors String Quartet), a B.A. in music (magna cum laude) from Atlantic Union College, and is working toward the completion of a doctorate in education from Harvard University (November, 2006).
