Adelphi University Launches M.S. in Physics with a Concentration in Optics

Garden City, NY
December 8, 2006

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that it will offer a new M.S. in physics with a concentration in optics in fall 2007. This innovative program draws upon the strengths of the Adelphi physics faculty and will prepare students for lucrative positions in the rapidly expanding field of optical physics. Adelphi is the only institution in the New York metro area and one of only 20 institutions in the nation to offer this degree.
Optics is playing an increasingly important role in growing technical fields, including telecommunications, computing, electronics, energy, cosmetic surgery, medical diagnostics, and lasers.
Adelphi’s rigorous, research-oriented 30-credit program is designed for recent graduates, as well as working professionals, who hold bachelor’s degrees in science, engineering, and other related disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to work alongside esteemed faculty in conducting cutting-edge research. Adelphi’s research facilities include the latest equipment in lasers and modern optics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, laser cooling and trapping, energy technologies, flame diagnostics, and nano-technologies.
The Adelphi physics faculty has distinguished itself in a wide variety of research programs in lasers and other applications of optical physics. Optics textbooks published by the Adelphi physics faculty have earned worldwide recognition. Physics department chair Gottipaty Rao conducts research on laser spectroscopy and trace gas detection. Professor Sean Bentley conducts research in quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and applications of quantum dots. Professor Joshua Grossman’s research includes laser cooling and trapping, quantum measurement, and precision atomic spectroscopy. Professor John Dooher’s research encompasses flame diagnostics and energy technologies. Professor Gene Hecht has authored numerous physics textbooks, including the widely used book Optics.
