Training for Professionals Who Work with
Young Families at Adelphi University on

Adelphi University’s Institute for Parenting will host "Attachment, Mastery, Interdependence: The Parenting Processes Model in Work with Infants, Toddlers, Young Children and their Families" on Thursday, May 17, 2007, in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, room 313, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Dr. Martha Edwards, a child development and family therapy expert will conduct a training designed for early childhood educators, child care providers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, psychologists, family therapists, school counselors, and other professionals in related fields.

Dr. Edwards, is the creator of the Bright Beginnings Parent-Child Program, a program for families with infants and toddlers, which is designed to promote infant mental health and school readiness.  The program has been implemented by New York City public schools, for at-risk families, at Even Start, and Early Head Start.  She currently is the director of the Center for the Developing Child and Family at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. She serves on the executive committee of the board of directors of the American Family Therapy Academy, and also on the board of Zero to Three New York Network. She is a member of the editorial board of the academic journal Family Process. She maintains a private practice in New York City.

The training will cover the components of the Parenting Processes Model (PPM).  Dr. Edwards will explain how the model can be applied, as well as discuss the socialization goals set by parents for their children and the role culture plays in understanding those goals.
