Adelphi University and the United Nations to Host Secong Annual "Teaching for Peace and Human Rights" Conference

Adelphi University and the United Nations will host the Second Annual Conference on "Teaching for Peace and Human Rights" on July 27, 2007 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, NY and July 28, 2007 at Adelphi University, Garden City, NY. The theme of this year’s conference, "Sports and Play," will highlight the importance of games in building self-esteem and confidence, as well as encouraging conflict resolution and fostering understanding between groups. The conference will bring together anyone interested in integrating peace and human rights education into the classroom, including teachers, public education administrators, U.N. ambassadors, and the non-governmental organization (NGO) community.
On day one, participants will join in a live video-conference with educators from around the world to write a Plan of Action supporting UNESCO’s International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World campaign (2001–2010). Day two will include workshops and presentations by Israel’s Soccer for Peace, GET.A.VOICE Project, Global Kids, Increase the Peace, and Facing History and Ourselves. The keynote address will be delivered by human rights activists from Sudan and Cambodia.
Teachers will have the opportunity to earn one continuing education credit for successful completion of the program. In addition, students can earn three credits by participating in the Peace and Human Rights Institute summer course from July 24–25.
