Adelphi University is pleased to announce that Marcia G. Welsh, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, has been selected by Long Island Business News as one of Long Island’s 50 Top Women in 2007. The honor recognizes exemplary women leaders in the business, education, government, and the nonprofit sectors.

Since joining Adelphi in 2001, Dr. Welsh’s strategic capabilities have led to an enriched academic environment brimming with the addition of over 200 new faculty members in six years and significant investments in faculty research. Dr. Welsh led a successful drive to increase the number of female and minority faculty. She also advocated for the introduction of family friendly-policies, including an extension of the tenure review process for faculty following the birth or adoption of a child.

Dr. Welsh has fostered the introduction of new academic programs for Adelphi’s more than 8,000 students, including programs in emergency management, health care and education. She has worked tirelessly and her contributions are evident in recent surges in undergraduate applications.

Dr. Welsh has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Woman of the Year in Education from the Long Island Chapter of Zonta International, the Gender Equity Award from the University of South Carolina Chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association, and Career Woman of the Year from the Columbia Chapter of the Organization of Business and Professional Women.

In 2006, she co-chaired the annual Long Island Masterworks Gala, and she serves on the Board of the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls. She is also a member of the Board of the New York City-based Aquila Theatre Company.

Dr. Welsh holds a B.S. and M.S. from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is keenly aware of and devoted to promoting women within the areas of scientific study.
