Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education Awarded National Accreditation by NCATE

Garden City, NY
May 24, 2007

Adelphi University is pleased to announce the full accreditation of its Ruth S. Ammon School of Education by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Adelphi joins a select group of universities to achieve this distinguished recognition and is one of 46 institutions in New York State to be recognized by the premier accrediting body.
NCATE’s dual mission is accountability and improvement in teacher preparation. It is comprised of a coalition of 35 specialty professional organizations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists, and local and state policy makers. NCATE accredited schools must meet rigorous standards set by the profession and for teacher education programs.
In November 2006, six members of the Board of Examiners visited the School to review the quality of Adelphi’s programs and standards. The Board of Examiners were impressed by the School’s accomplishments and expressed that it had successfully met all six conditions of NCATE accreditation which include candidate knowledge, skills, and dispositions; assessment system and unit evaluation; field experiences and clinical practice; diversity; faculty qualifications, performance, and development; and unit governance and resources.
“We share the commitment to excellence in teacher education for which NCATE is known for and accept the enormous responsibility that requires us to hold ourselves to the highest national standards,” said Dr. Ronald S. Feingold, dean of the Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education. “The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is committed to preparing exceptional teachers and school leaders who transform lives.”
The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education offers more than 35 graduate and undergraduate programs in the areas of communication sciences and disorders, health and physical education, and curriculum and instruction. Through its curriculum, outreach, and scholarship, the School embraces six core values: scholarship, reflective practice, social justice, inclusive community, wellness, and creativity and the arts. Graduates emerge as professionals prepared to address the diverse needs of their students and clients and are sought after for positions in schools and clinical settings. Every day, over 100,000 children in New York schools are taught by Adelphi graduates.
