Sports Leadership Institute 2007 Leadership Awards Dinner at Adelphi University

The Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University will host the 2007 Leadership Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. This year’s honorees are William J. Fishlinger, chairman and chief executive officer of Wright Risk Management (WRM) and Donna A. Lopiano, chief executive officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation. The Sports Leadership Awards were created in 2006 to honor individuals who use the power of sport and inspire us with their service to the community. The cocktail hour is 6:00 PM, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony.

About the Honorees
William J. Fishlinger
William J. Fishlinger
William J. Fishlinger, chairman and chief executive officer of Wright Risk Management (WRM), will be honored with the Corporate Leadership Award. For more than 28 years, the company has designed and managed comprehensive risk financing solutions for public and private sector entities. Mr. Fishlinger has been recognized for creating some of the most innovative and successful risk financing vehicles, including New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal (NYSIR) and New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal (NYMIR). He has lectured extensively in the areas of general litigation, risk financing, and insurance. In addition to his duties with WRM, he is presiding partner of Congdon, Flaherty, O’Callaghan, Reid, Donlon, Travis & Fishlinger (CFO). As an attorney, he has been involved in the defense of many of the largest and most complex civil cases in New York State and the federal court system. He serves on many boards of organizations concerned with the educational needs of young people, as well as medical research directed at finding a cure for illnesses. He created the Future Leadership Foundation, whose mission is to help young people overcome health and education obstacles so they can become future leaders. He is a graduate of St. John’s University School of Law and the State University of Maryland.

Donna A. Lopiano
Donna A. Lopiano
Donna A. Lopiano, chief executive officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation, will be honored with the Community Leadership Award. The foundation is dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through sport and physical activity. Dr. Lopiano is consistently recognized as one of the top executives in the sports industry. She was recently named one of “The 10 Most Powerful Women in Sports” by Fox Sports. Sporting News has also listed her as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in Sports.” As an expert on Title IX and gender equity issues, she often participates in conferences, lectures to educate the public, and testifies in court cases. She has coached college men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and softball. Prior to her leadership position at the Women’s Sports Foundation, Dr. Lopiano served as the University of Texas’s director of women’s athletics for 18 years. As an athlete, she participated in 26 national championships in four sports and was a nine-time All-American at four different positions in softball, a sport in which she played on six national championship teams. She is a member of the National Sports Hall of Fame, the National Softball Hall of Fame, and the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, among others. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California.
