June 27, 2007

Eight Adelphi faculty and students will join more than 20,000 grassroots leaders, community organizers, educators, and students from across the country and world at the first-ever United States Social Forum (USSF), For
another world to be possible, another U.S. is necessary, from June 27 through July 1, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. Adelphi participants include students Dianne Bosquet, Brittany Consigli, Ali Esposito, Radha Hettiarachchi, Joannie Rodriguez, and Amy Williams who are being sponsored by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Marcia G. Welsh, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Gayle Insler, and the Student Government Association. Assistant Professors Melanie Bush and Deborah Little will accompany the students.
The forum will focus on key issues, including the Gulf Coast reconstruction;
indigenous sovereignty; worker's rights; gender and sexuality; war; health care;
environmental sustainability; and immigrant rights. The five-day event will feature a wide array of presentations, marches, and performances geared toward promoting peace and justice, as well as offer 200 workshops and activities to foster political discussion and strategic planning. The forum will provide a powerful platform to build a movement in this country to inspire social change.
As the World Social Forum, an annual gathering of 150,000 people from over 100 countries success grew from 2001, there was an international call for the United States to hold its own forum. The United States Social Forum was developed in response to this groundswell of interest.
