Peter B. Goldberg, president and CEO of the Alliance for Children and Families, will deliver the first annual Joseph L. Vigilante Lecture, "Storming the Barricades of Indifference: The Importance of Mission-based Advocacy," on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at 7:00 PM in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event, sponsored by the Joseph L. Vigilante Endowment, the Office of the President, and the Adelphi University School of Social Work, is free and open to the public.
Since 1998, Mr. Goldberg has been selected by the Nonprofit Times as one of the 50 most influential people in the nonprofit sector six times. As president and CEO of Alliance, he leads an influential network whose mission is to support member agencies in order to build a healthy society for all children and families and to strengthen America’s nonprofit sector. The Milwaukee-based Alliance for Children and Families, formed by the 1998 merger of Family Service America and the National Association of Homes and Services for Children, represents more than 370 nonprofit child- and family-serving organizations, with a cumulative operating budget of $4.1 billion serving more than 6,000 communities across the nation.
Prior to joining the Alliance in 1994, Mr. Goldberg held a variety of positions in the corporate and philanthropic fields, as well as the public sector. He is the past president of the Prudential Foundation (1990-1994) and former director of Primerica’s social responsibility programs (1982-1988). In addition, he held leadership positions in state and federal agencies focused on drug and alcohol abuse.
Mr. Goldberg is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, chair of the board of the Children’s Institute (Oregon), board of trustee member of The Bridgespan Group (Boston), a member of the National Human Services Assembly, chair of the advisory committee of The Listening Post Project at the Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and a member of the advisory board of the Harvard Center for Society and Health. In the past, he has served on other nonprofit boards, including the Community Service Society of New York, The Independent Sector, and the Children of Alcoholics Foundation.
