Pieter Brueghel the Younger Painting on Exhibit at Adelphi University From November 13 through 16, 2007
Exhbition Commemorates Naming of Fine Arts Building

Garden City, NY
October 24, 2007

Adelphi University will celebrate the naming of the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts (formerly the Fine Arts and Facilities Building) on Monday, November 12, 2007 with a dedication ceremony and the opening of the Pieter Brueghel the Younger exhibition featuring The Flemish Proverbs at its Garden City campus. The rare piece, on temporary loan from Adele Klapper ’92, M.A. ’99, can be viewed by the general public beginning Tuesday, November 13 through Friday, November 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
The Flemish Proverbs illustrates 104 proverbs and sayings and depicts a larger theme of the world as it should not be. The oil on canvas painting is overflowing with vignettes and is based on a painting by the artist’s father, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, signed and dated 1559. Although his paintings were often scenes of rural life, Pieter Brueghel the Younger is also known for his mastery of landscapes, religious subjects, and architecture.
Mrs. Klapper has been a generous supporter of Adelphi. She helped the University celebrate the 2006 opening of its Fine Arts and Facilities Building with a generous loan of Impressionist masterworks from the collection that she acquired with her late husband Herbert. Adelphi honored her with the 2007 Outstanding Service to Adelphi award at its President’s Gala. She is also the recipient of the President’s Medal of Merit, the highest award given by an Adelphi president. Mrs. Klapper's long-held dream of attending college was fulfilled when she graduated with a B.A. in art from Adelphi University in 1992, at the age of 62, and an M.A. in art in 1999.
The 7,000-square foot Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, the first academic building that was added to the campus in more than 30 years, represents Adelphi’s commitment to the arts and will enable the Department of Art and Art History to better serve the entire student community with studio and exhibition spaces for painting, print making, sculpture, and ceramics.
