Arthur Levitt chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 1993 to 2001, will address "Ensuring the Integrity of the Nation’s Capital Markets," as part of Adelphi University’s Hagedorn Corporate Social Responsibility Series. Mr. Levitt, the longest-serving SEC chairman, was known for his emphasis on investor protection. During his two terms, he worked to educate and empower U.S. investors, creating the Office of Investor Education and Assistance and establishing the commission’s website (www.sec.gov), to provide the public with free and easy access to corporate filings and investor-education material.
Before joining the SEC, Mr. Levitt, who had a lengthy career on Wall Street, owned the Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call. Previously, he served as chairman of the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the American Stock Exchange. Currently, Mr. Levitt is senior advisor to The Carlyle Group, Promontory Financial Group, and Wisdom Tree; on the board of Bloomberg LLP; and a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
Started in 2003 through a generous contribution from Horace ’01 (Hon.) and Amy Hagedorn ’05 (Hon.), Adelphi’s annual lectureship series on Corporate Social Responsibility enables the University to invite prominent speakers to address pressing issues of the day. The series fits with the University’s overall goal to create a culture of conscience among students, faculty, staff, administrators, and local community members. Previous speakers include David Boies, Thomas J. Donohue M.B.A. '65, Noreen Harrington '81, Peter G. Peterson, and Josh S. Weston.
