African Art Exhibition at Adelphi University Through February 27, 2008

Garden City, NY
January 25, 2008

Adelphi University is pleased to present "Weapons, Tools, and Rituals: A Look at the African Ceremonial Implements from the Frederick and Claire Mebel Collection," curated by Eliz Alahverdian, on display in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, through Wednesday, February 27, 2008. A free reception will be held on Sunday, February 17 at 1:00 PM
Unlike traditional African art exhibitions that focus primarily on sculpture, textiles, and decorative ornaments, the 54 pieces from the Frederick and Claire Mebel Collection showcase utilitarian tools that represent the daily living experiences of African communities. The exhibition, which includes a vast majority of objects made from iron, features ceremonial objects, prestige objects indicating status, and weapons of war. The pieces herald the communal values of spirituality, power, fertility, war, and the land.
The University Center Gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. For more information, please visit http://events.adelphi.edu/culturalevents/art.php, or contact Richard Vaux, director of exhibitions, at 516.877.4462 or galleryexhibitions@adelphi.edu.
