Holocaust Scholar David Engel, Ph.D., to Discuss Newly Discovered
Anne Frank Family Documents at Adelphi University

Noted Holocaust scholar David Engel, Ph.D., will discuss newly discovered documents, including letters by Anne Frank's father Ottowhich reveal a new chapter in the Frank family’s storyat Adelphi University. His lecture, "The Frank Family Between Holland and America," will be delivered on Monday, February 11, 2008, at 7:00 PM, in Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Engel will trace the dramatic sequence of events that led up to the decision by Otto Frank to hide his family in a secret annex in Amsterdam, in July 1942. New documents found in 2007 reveal Mr. Frank's desperate attempts to come to America beginning in April 1941. Dr. Engel’s presentation will answer questions such as what prompted Mr. Frank to seek American visas, why he waited so long to do so, and why his efforts failed.
Dr. Engel is Maurice Greenberg professor of Holocaust studies, professor of Hebrew and Judaic studies, and professor of history at New York University. He is the author of The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews, Facing a Holocaust: The Polish Government-in-Exile and the Jews, 1943-1945, the forthcoming A Truly Overwhelming Picture: The Holocaust and Jewish Historiography, and numerous research articles, reviews, and writings. Dr. Engel holds a doctorate in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed postdoctoral study at Hebrew University's Division of Holocaust Studies, Institute for Contemporary Jewry, in Jerusalem.
