Adelphi University will confirm more than 2,500 graduates at the associate's bachelor's, and master's levels at its 112th Commencement on Monday, May 19, 2008. Adelphi President Robert A. Scott will deliver the Commencement address, and the University will award honorary degrees to financial executive Lon Gorman, philanthropist Adele C. Smithers, and choreographer Paul Taylor.

The Commencement ceremony will be held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY. A separate hooding ceremony for doctoral candidates will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. at the Garden City campus.

Monday's Commencement will begin with the academic procession, which includes members of the Board of Trustees, University President Robert A. Scott, the honorees, and graduates. During the program, Board Chairman Michael J. Campbell '65 and Dr. Scott will bestow honorary degrees to this year's recipients:
  • Lon Gorman, chairman of the board of NYFIX, Inc., board member for both the newly formed NASDAQ OMX Group and the NASDAQ Exchange, and retired vice chairman of The Charles Schwab Corporation
  • Adele C. Smithers, philanthropist and president of the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation
  • Paul Taylor, choreographer and founder of the Paul Taylor Dance Company

Following the presentation of the honorary degrees and awards, Dr. Robert A. Scott will deliver the Commencement address. Appointed as Adelphi's ninth president and professor of anthropology and sociology in July 2000, Dr. Scott has built on Adelphi's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education and continues to link the liberal arts and sciences with professional programs. He has been the driving force behind the success Adelphi University has achieved in the last several years. Undergraduate enrollment has jumped by more than 50 percent since 2000, and Adelphi's 2007 freshman class of 900 students marked a 20-year high for the University. Between 2000 and 2007, Adelphi grew its full-time faculty ranks by 46 percent, from 201 to 293. In 2003, Adelphi opened its first new residence hall in 36 years, and in 2005, it opened the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, the first academic building to be added to the campus in more than 30 years.

A widely published author, community leader, and social justice advocate, Dr. Scott is one of the few people ever to hold all three top positions in American higher education: head of an independent university, a public institution, and a state higher education coordinating board. Dr. Scott was recognized with the 2008 Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II for his outstanding efforts in promoting the understanding and support of education.
