Adelphi University School of Social Work Launches Accelerated, Full-time Ph.D. Program

Garden City, NY
February 26, 2008

Adelphi University School of Social Work has added an accelerated, full-time option for Ph.D. candidates. Students who elect this option will take two courses, two days a week for two years. For both the full-time curriculum and a continuing, part-time option, there is an additional year-long course that meets at the convenience of students and faculty.
Both the accelerated Ph.D. program and the part-time option are tailored to the needs of working professionals. Classes meet in the late afternoon and early evening. Students who pursue the continuing, part-time option take two courses one day a week for eight semesters or two years.
Both options require that students complete and successfully defend a dissertation based on original, independent research.
In fall 2006, Adelphi received state-approval to convert its longstanding Doctor of Social Welfare (D.S.W.) degree to a Ph.D. in social work. The innovative Ph.D. program emphasizes the development, testing, and dissemination of new knowledge for social work practice. It educates experienced social workers for leadership positions as scholars, educators, researchers, practitioners, administrators, and service providers who can effect significant change in social welfare policy and practice. Students in the program gain proficiency in thinking critically; evaluating a broad spectrum of clinical, administrative, and policy interventions; and using extant knowledge creatively.
