Adelphi University and the United Nations to Host Third Annual "Teaching For Peace and Human Rights" Conference

Adelphi University and the United Nations will host the Third Annual Conference on "Teaching for Peace and Human Rights" on May 1, 2008 at Adelphi University, Garden City, NY, and May 2, 2008 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, NY. The conference will bring together anyone interested in integrating peace and human rights education into the classroom, including teachers, public education administrators, U.N. ambassadors, and the non-governmental organization (NGO) community.
Day one will include workshop topics on interactive global education, challenging oppression in our schools, and conflict resolution in school and community, among others. Presentations will also be made by representatives of Camp Hope in Rwanda and the Holocaust Resource Center in Manhasset. On day two, participants will join in a live video-conference with educators from around the world to write a Declaration to support UNESCO’s International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World Campaign (2001-2010).
Teachers will have the opportunity to earn one continuing education credit for successful completion of the program. In addition, students can earn three credits by participating in the Peace and Human Rights Institute summer course.
