On Sunday, April 13, 2008,  AHA Association  and Adelphi University will co-sponsor their 8th annual conference entitled: Issues in Independent Living for Adolescents and Adults on the Autism Spectrum.

This conference includes lectures, workshops and panels featuring outstanding professionals in the field.  Topics to be covered this year include job interviews, communication, guardianship, sensory issues, and coping with anxiety among others.

The keynote address will be delivered by Peter Gerhardt, Ed.D, President of the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) who will speak on Sexuality and the Autism Spectrum: Adolescence through Adulthood, issues and challenges.  Dr. Gerhardt is both a knowledgeable and spirited speaker.

This annual conference once again draws together leading clinicians, researchers and individuals on the spectrum as speakers to raise awareness about autism, identify the needs of adolescents and adults with autism, and offer solutions to the challenges of independent living for such individuals.  Area professionals, family members, friends, and individuals affected by the condition are all encouraged to attend.

Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHA) Inc. and Adelphi University’s Ammon School of Education collaborate with and would like to thank The Asperger Institute of the NYU Child Study Center, The Cody Center for Autism and Disabilities at Stony Brook University, Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism at North Shore-LIJ Health Systems, and GRASP/ The Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership for their participation in this important effort. This conference is funded in part by Autism Speaks.

What is AHA Association?

AHA was formed 20 years ago out of Stony Brook University by a small group of parents and Dr. John Pomeroy seeking more support and information. They have grown to 10 support groups from Montauk to Manhattan serving families, professionals and individuals on the spectrum with groups for school age issues, for families with older teens and adults and separate groups for teens and for adults. AHA presents two major conferences yearly. Their website and electronic list serves families, individuals and professionals in New York and across the country and internationally.
