Awareness on Environmental Pollutants & Disease: The True Stories Behind the Love Canal and 9/11 Heroes, at Adelphi University on April 8, 2008

Garden City, NY
April 4, 2008

What:
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Love Canal disaster. The Love Canal neighborhood, located in Niagra Falls, NY, epitomized the issues of hazardous wastes and is the catalyst for the federal government Superfund program. The program ensures that remaining hazardous waste sites are cleaned up. It has been reported, that nearly 20,000 tons of toxic chemicals were dumped and buried beneath the surface of homes, causing the rates of cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and other health issues to increase.
Luella Kenny, a Love Canal survivor and member of the board of directors for the Center for Health, Environment & Justice, in Falls Church, VA, will tell her story and describe her experience of living with contaminated water, soil, and air, as well as losing her 7-year-old son, Jon, who died of kidney ailment in 1978.
In addition, more than 10 September 11th heroes (first responders and volunteers) suffering from various deteriorating health problems, and John Feal, founder of the Feal Good Foundation, will discuss their courageous efforts and the after effects of exposure to air pollutants and toxic elements from the World Trade Center disasters.
The event was spearheaded by four Adelphi biology students (Dory Londono, Mark Ishmail, Daniel Ciavarella, and Brandon Lundgren) in Professor Benjamin Weeks’ Environmental Pollutants and Disease class. The purpose of the event is to increase environmental awareness.
