Adelphi University Board of Trustees Elects New Slate of Officers and One New Trustee

Garden City, NY
July 24, 2008

On June 9, 2008, Adelphi University elected three new officers and one new member to its Board of Trustees. Thomas F. Motamed ’71, chairman and chief executive officer of CNA Financial Corp. (effective June 2009) and retired vice chairman and chief operating officer of The Chubb Corporation, will replace Michael J. Campbell ’65 as chairman. Carol A. Ammon M.B.A. ’79, founder and retired chief executive officer and former chairman of the board of Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc., was elected vice-chair and will replace Leon M. Pollack ’63. Katherine H. Littlefield, a director of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, was elected as secretary, a position previously held by John J. Gutleber ’68, M.B.A. ’70. Helene R. Sullivan ’79, retired chief financial officer of Save the Children, will also join the board as a new Trustee.
During his tenure, Mr. Campbell played a crucial role in launching The Campaign for Adelphi University, the University’s first comprehensive campaign, which is providing funding for Adelphi’s new Performing Arts Center, its Center for Recreation and Sports, the Alice Brown Early Learning Center, the renovation of Woodruff Hall, and increased support for endowments. To date, Adelphi has raised nearly $36.2 million toward its $56 million goal, with universal support from the Board of Trustees, including a record-breaking $9.5 million gift from Ms. Ammon.
President Robert A. Scott thanked the retiring officers for their service. "Adelphi University greatly appreciates the extraordinary leadership and support demonstrated by Michael Campbell, Leon Pollack, and John Gutleber," said Dr. Scott. "I am ever grateful for the generosity, time, and talent of these three outstanding alumni leaders. I am certain that Adelphi will continue to soar to new heights under the new board leadership as well as the added expertise from Helene Sullivan."
"To have the opportunity to assume the responsibilities of chairman and serve my alma mater during this period of growth and success is truly a privilege,” said Mr. Motamed. "We plan to build on the University’s strong momentum and provide strategic guidance as Adelphi plans for a robust future."
Mr. Motamed joined The Chubb Corporation in 1977 as a claims trainee and rose steadily through the company. He was appointed to his former position as vice chairman and chief operating officer in 2002, after his strategy to restructure and refocus the company’s operations enabled Chubb to emerge from a soft market that devastated many of its competitors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology at Adelphi in 1971, and holds a J.D. from Widener University School of Law. A steadfast supporter of his alma mater, Mr. Motamed is a co-chair of The Campaign for Adelphi University.
Carol A. Ammon and Katherine Littlefield are also delighted to serve as officers. Ms. Ammon, a board member since 2006, earned her M.B.A. from Adelphi and made Adelphi history in 2005 with a record-breaking gift of $9.5 million. Ms. Littlefield, a board member since 2005, is a co-chair of The Campaign for Adelphi University.
Six current and former Trustees, including Ms. Ammon, Mr. Campbell, Ms. Littlefield, and Mr. Motamed, as well as Leon M. Pollack ’63 and Robert B. Willumstad ’05 (Hon.), are members of Adelphi’s most prominent giving society, the Million Dollar Round Table.
