Andrew Sayfer
Adelphi University School of Social Work Dean Andrew W. Safyer to Participate in First Leadership Academy in Aging
---
Garden City, NY
August 8, 2008

---
Adelphi University School of Social Work Dean Andrew W. Safyer has been selected as an inaugural member of the Leadership Academy in Aging, sponsored by the Social Work Leadership Institute of the New York Academy of Medicine and the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work, with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation. Dr. Safyer was one of only 12 selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to participate in the new academy.

The Leadership Academy in Aging aims to produce leaders in aging education and policy and ensure that the next generation of care professionals can effectively meet the needs of the aging, a population that will include one in five Americans by the year 2030, according to Social Work Leadership Institute Director Patricia Volland. The academy will commence with the first of four planned workshops in September 2008. The workshops are designed to equip members with tools to integrate the aging agenda into higher education curriculums. Topics to be examined include management, student recruitment, faculty involvement, media relations, community development, legislative outreach, and fundraising.

The Adelphi University School of Social Work has been on the forefront in responding to the alarming increase of older adults who are in need of services. A significant number of the faculty were recruited with a commitment to research, service, and training that focuses on aging issues. They have worked with other social work faculty to infuse aging content into the curriculum and to provide innovative models of field practice experiences, while working with older adults through several directives. These initiatives funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation have served as a catalyst for other university-community partnerships.

Dr. Safyer was appointed dean and professor at Adelphi School of Social Work in August 2004. A clinical researcher for more than 25 years, he has authored a range of articles and chapters in the clinical and mental health area and was the recipient of a considerable number of foundation and federal grants. His prior interests focused on high risk early adolescents and their families and he has been engaged in testing the efficacy of prevention intervention programs with the aim of facilitating healthy development. Dr. Safyer’s present interest also includes leadership development and succession planning pertaining to nonprofit organizations. Along with community and foundation leaders on Long Island, he was instrumental in establishing the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Adelphi University. He continues to serve on professional editorial and community boards and is a member of the Commission of Professional Development for the Council on Social Work Education. He is the former co-editor of the journal, The Clinical Supervisor. Dr. Safyer obtained his doctorate in social work and psychology at University of Michigan.
