The New York Times Company Announces its Annual Nonprofit Excellence Awards

Garden City, NY
September 08, 2008
The New York Times Company is now accepting applications for its competitive annual New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards, recognizing outstanding nonprofit organizations based in and serving the five boroughs of New York City, as well as Suffolk, Nassau, and Westchester counties. Online applications are available at http://nytawards.fcny.org/npea/definition/ and will be accepted through Friday, November 21, 2008.
Adelphi University’s Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership and the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York will host two application clinics to provide tips and insight into the application process and answer questions.
The Clinics:
Nassau County
Thursday, September 18, 2008
Adelphi’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530
9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Suffolk County
Thursday, September 18, 2008
Adelphi’s Hauppauge Center, 55 Kennedy Drive, Hauppauge, NY 11788

The awards are a collaborative effort of the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG), which joined the Times Company in establishing this program.
Four awards for management excellence will be presented. The winner of the general excellence award will receive $25,000, while the three other honorees will each receive $5,000 for outstanding performance in at least one key area of nonprofit management. Key areas correspond to the following criteria, which form the basis for evaluation of nominees: focus on results; governance structure that moves the organization forward; strong, transparent and accountable financial management; inclusive and diverse organizational practices; enlightened use of human and other resources; regular and effective communications; and effective, ethical fundraising and resource development.
Each of the four winning organizations will also receive a scholarship of $4,500 to be applied toward the Columbia Business School Executive Education Institute for Not-for-Profit Management. The four awards, which are intended to honor nonprofit management excellence rather than program content, will be presented at a special event at TheTimesCenter.
To register for any of the clinics, please contact Barbara Ernest, at (212) 502-4191, extension 24.
