How do you react when your child throws a temper tantrum, hits another child, or doesn't seem to listen to you?
Adelphi University's Institute for Parenting is proud to host Myrna B. Shure, Ph.D., esteemed researcher and developer of the Raising a Thinking Child Program for families with young children and the I Can Problem Solve school curriculum for pre-schoolers and young children. The Raising a Thinking Child Program provides steps that parents can follow to teach their young children to solve problems and resolve everyday conflicts. Her presentation, "Raising a Thinking Child" is part of the Institute's Parent Coffee Series, and is scheduled on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in Adelphi's new Alice Brown Early Learning Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. An interactive Q&A session will follow. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend. The registration fee is $10.
Dr. Myrna B. Shure is a developmental psychologist and the best-selling author of Raising a Thinking Child: Help Your Young Child to Resolve Everyday Conflicts and Get Along With Others. In her bestseller, she introduced her nationally acclaimed I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) Programs, which are designed to help children ages three through twelve years-old increase their empathy, decrease aggressive and shy behavior, and develop better social relationships. ICPS teaches children "how" to think, not "what" to think. The child program uses games, stories, puppets, and role playing to make learning enjoyable. The parent program involves exercises and communication techniques to help parents think about their own feelings, become sensitive to those of their child's, find out their child's view of the problem, and find ways to engage their child in the process. Dr. Shure has won numerous awards for developing ICPS, including from the American Psychological Association, National Mental Health Association, U.S. Department of Education, National Association of School Psychologists, and American Federation of Teachers, among others.
Dr. Shure previously had a weekly column about parenting with the Philadelphia Daily News. She is a regular guest expert for Early Childhood Today, e-version, published by Scholastic, and professor of psychology at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
