Adelphi University Wins Prestigious Award by Computerworld for Excellence in Green Information Technology

Adelphi University was recognized as a top honoree by IDG’s Computerworld in its inaugural “Best Practices in Green IT” Awards Program, which identifies and acknowledges excellence among early adopters and industry leaders in the green information technology (IT) movement. Adelphi received its impressive distinction in the “Reducing IT Complexity Increases Green IT” category was selected from among a field of strong finalists that included Dell, Inc., Infosys Technologies Limited, Sprint Nextel, and University of California Irvine. The announcement was made on September 18 at Computerworld’s Green IT Symposium in National Harbor, Maryland.
“We are honored that Adelphi’s leadership in energy conservation and recycling has been recognized,” said Jack Chen, chief information officer. Chen, who oversees the Office of Information Technology and Resources, developed a comprehensive plan of strategic green IT initiatives. “Our actions positively impact students, faculty and staff, reduce costs and allow us to contribute to Adelphi’s efforts to conserve resources and protect the environment.”
Adelphi’s green IT strategic initiatives include:
- remote shut-down of computers
- conversion to energy-efficient servers
- transition to virtualization software
- consolidation of storage
- installation of energy-saving equipment
- reduction of paper use
- telecommuting and energy-efficient transportation
“While the lower costs and environmental benefits associated with greener IT have long been proven, power consumption by the world's data centers continues to grow,” said Ron Milton, executive vice president of Computerworld. “The organizations and professionals named honorees in Computerworld’s inaugural 'Best Practices in Green IT' Awards Program are creating the best practices in what is the early stages of green IT. They are the early adopters and industry leaders who are responsible for reducing their IT organization's carbon footprint and are setting industry standards on curbing power consumption, environmental danger, and ongoing costs.”
