Adelphi University welcomes alumna and best-selling author Alice Hoffman ’73 for a "Reading and Conversation to Celebrate the new Alice Hoffman Fellowships in Creative Writing" on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the new Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Ms. Hoffman will discuss and sign her newest book, The Third Angel, and the recipients of the first Alice Hoffman Fellowships in Creative Writing will be announced. This is a ticketed event.

Ms. Hoffman will read excerpts from her eighteenth novel, The Third Angel (2008), published by Shaye Areheart Books. A compelling and captivating work, The Third Angel examines the lives of three London women at different crossroads in their lives, and has garnered praise from national media, including the New York Times, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist.

Ms. Hoffman has written such award-winning works as Property Of, The Drowning Season, and Angel Landing, among many others. Her novels have been translated into more than 20 languages and more than 100 foreign editions and have received mention as notable books of the year by the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, Library Journal, and People Magazine. Practical Magic was made into a Warner film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Alice Hoffman will also present the $6,000 Fellowships to Lisa Bermudez (poet) and Erica Naess (fiction writer).  Recognizing students with demonstrated imaginative talent, superior writing skills, scholarly diligence, and noteworthy engagement with the literary and academic community, the Fellowships offer the recipients a significant mentor outside the M.F.A. in Creative Writing Program. The Fellowships pair students with mentors from whom they will gain experience, insight, advice, and for whom they will work as a research assistant during the spring semester. Edward Hirsch, celebrated poet and president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, will work with Ms. Bermudez, and Francine Prose, novelist and president of PEN American Center, will work with Ms. Naess.

Ticket prices are $10 for the public; $5 for seniors (60 or over), Adelphi University staff, faculty, and alumni (at the Box Office only - 1 per ID); and $2 for Adelphi students (at the Box Office only - 1 per ID).
