The Adelphi University Institute for Parenting Establishes Classes for Marine Dads Who are Experiencing the Challenge of Raising Their Young Children After Separation or Divorce
Garden City, NY
January 21, 2009

Marines and other military personnel often need to be away from their families for extended time periods while serving the country. Some marriages don't make it under the stress of the long separation. Fathers return to the added challenge of parenting without a partner to discuss how to handle everyday concerns or the support when more difficult problems arise. Adelphi University's Institute for Parenting will offer, "Dads on Duty," a series of seven parent education classes starting Tuesday, March 17 and ending Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Linen Hall, Lower Level, Room 1, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY to provide helpful information about raising kids and to provide a forum for discussion and support for servicemen with children. The class meets on the third Tuesday of each month, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and a light dinner will be served. This program is co-sponsored by the State Bank of Long Island, who will present one workshop on financial literacy with the goal of helping to reduce financial stress on young families particularly when there are two households to support. Some gifts will be raffled off at the end as incentive for coming to this program.
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding and the most challenging of experiences. Whether you are a custodial or non-custodial dad, parenting provides many challenges: communication, discipline, balancing work and family, long separations, financial stress, or parenting with an ex-partner. Some topics to be addressed include: understanding and handling big feelings—theirs and yours; positive discipline; routines and responsibilities; creating quality time with your children; early language, literacy, and school readiness; how to talk so your child will listen; how to listen so your child will talk; and reducing your family's financial stress. These informative classes will give marine dads the opportunity to connect with other dads who have had similar experiences, along with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and support they need to navigate those tough times through unique parenting problems.
"State Bank has been a long-standing and strong supporter of the communities we serve through direct philanthropic consideration and our volunteer efforts at many community organizations," said Deborah Kendric from State Bank of Long Island. "We are proud to support Adelphi University's Dads on Duty program. We feel the program is a great service for the brave men who serve in our armed forces. After all they have done for us and our country, we are happy to provide parenting or financial support they may need. We are looking forward to working with Adelphi to make this a successful program."
