Garden City, NY
January 29, 2009

---
In collaboration with The Nassau County Human Rights Commission, Adelphi University’s Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is hosting the 23rd Annual Human Rights Awareness Conference on February 12, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., at Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is a collaboration of schools, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), New York City Youth Board, Alisty Joy Keneth Diversified, New York Police Department Anti-bias Task Force, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and other community-based and social service organizations.

In a partnership initiated by adjunct professor Bruce Castellano, more than 300 students from Nassau and Suffolk high schools will participate in this event, promoting human decency, respect and sensitivity for people of all races, religions, cultures, ages, and genders. The conference consists of workshops and social interactions, in which students address the issues of bias and prejudices and examine what’s going on and how they, as individuals and members of their communities, can make an impact to positively change these circumstances. The day ends with a full group session.

For more information, contact Patrice Armstrong-Leach, assistant dean of the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, at 516.877.4094, or armstrong-leach@adelphi.edu, or contact Bruce Castellano at 516.877.4089, or Castellano@adelphi.edu.
