The 2009 HealthNets Conference at Adelphi University

The 2009 HealthNets Conference will be presented on March 27, 2009, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The conference will begin with opening remarks from Jean Harris, assistant professor of health studies and HealthNets conference chair, and a welcome by Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University.
The keynote speaker will be Alumna Lori Rose Benson M.A. '98, director, New York City Department of Education, Office of Fitness and Health Education, who will be speaking on "New York City: A Strategic Plan for Creating a Culture of Health and Fitness." Afterwards, a series of workshops will be presented on various ways to promote and teach general health, including violence prevention strategies, how to curb alcohol and drug usage, how to drive a school system to adopt a culture of health and fitness, ethical awareness, and podcasting in health education. Numerous presenters from schools and organizations on Long Island, Brooklyn, and New York State will be conducting the workshops, including Anne Gibbone, assistant professor, and Emilia Zarco, associate professor, of Adelphi University. The conference will conclude with a closing address by Paul Failla, educational consultant in Suffolk County, on "Character Education in Motion."
Founded in the fall of 1997 by Dr. Monica Homer and Professor Mary Barrese, HealthNets is a professional organization that promotes the exchange of ideas in teaching and research among health educators. The organization consists of bi-semester meetings where participants share news about conferences at the local, state and national level, discuss innovative teaching strategies and explore advances in health studies.
