February 13, 2009

Adelphi University’s Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is a presenting sponsor and participating exhibitor in Channel 13/WNET and WLIW21’s fourth annual “Teaching and Learning Celebration,” on March 6 and 7, 2009, at the Hilton New York, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY. Faculty leading workshops and panels from the School of Education are Professor Devin Thornburg, Visiting Assistant Professor Elite Ben-Yosef, and Professor Judith Cohen. Also presenting a workshop is Carol Phelan, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., director of Adelphi’s Student Counseling Center. The event is a large professional development conference for pre-K-12 teachers, administrators, policy makers, students, and families.
During the two-day conference, pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as administrators, parents and students, will enjoy access to the nation’s leaders in creativity, science, and autism.
Confirmed keynote speakers for this year’s Celebration are Temple Grandin, Ph.D., arguably the world’s most accomplished, well-known adult with autism; Alan Alda, a six-time Emmy Award winner whose long time interest in science and in promoting a greater public understanding of science led to his hosting the award-winning PBS series Scientific American Frontiers for 11 years; and Sir Kenneth Robinson, who emphasizes the need for children’s creativity to be appreciated and developed in education.
Dr. Judith Cohen will be coordinating “A Successful Model for Supporting Students on the Spectrum during the College Years,” which will include Carol Phelan. Dr. Thornburg’s lecture, “Social Emotional Learning in Teacher Education and Professional Development,” will address the importance of social and emotional needs of school-aged populations and the implications for educators. Dr. Ben-Yosef’s lecture, “Storyboarding for Classroom Applications,” will focus on how teachers must learn who students are and where they come from in order to better reach and be able to teach them.
Educators can purchase tickets in person on March 6 or 7. Additional event information and registration are available at
