Psychologist and Mental Health Expert Jerome Wakefield, Ph.D., to Speak at the Lindemann Lecture in Human Development

Jerome Wakefield, Ph.D., university professor, professor of social work, professor of conceptual foundations of psychiatry, and affiliate faculty of bioethics at New York University, will present the 2009 Lindemann Lecture in Human Development, “The Loss of Sadness: Are We Misdiagnosing Normal Human Emotion as Clinical Depression?” on March 11, 2009, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., at Adelphi’s
Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Following the discussion, Adelphi’s Derner Institute Dean Jean Lau Chin and Senior Adjunct Faculty Member Morris Eagle will discuss “The Role of Context and Culture in Evaluating Mental Health and Mental Illness.”
Dr. Wakefield is the author of more than 150 publications on the conceptual foundations of the mental health professions, appearing in journals in psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, and social work. With Alan Hurwitz, he co-authored
The Loss of Sadness: How Psychiatry Transformed Normal Human Sorrow into Depressive Disorder (Oxford, 2007). The book was named best psychology book of 2007 by the American Association of Professional and Scholarly Publishers.
Dr. Wakefield is also lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and has previously held faculty positions at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Rutgers University. He holds two doctorates, one in social work and one in philosophy, as well as a master’s degree in mathematics, all from the University of California at Berkeley.
The Lindemann Lecture in Human Development is an annual lecture series endowed by Carol Lindemann ’70 Ph.D., direc-tor of the New York Psychological Center and president of the Lindemann Foundation, which allows Adelphi to sponsor campus lectures by some of the foremost thinkers and writers in the field of psychology.
