Adelphi University to Celebrate the Bicentennial of Charles Darwin's Birth with the 21st Annual Joseph J. Napolitano Memorial Lecture

Johannah E. Barry, president of Galapagos Conservancy, will mark the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth as Adelphi University celebrates his contributions at the 21st annual Joseph J. Napolitano Memorial Lecture on April 6, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., at Adelphi's Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event, sponsored by Adelphi’s Biology Department, is free and open to the public. Ms. Barry’s remarks will include a description of the unique flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands, where some of Darwin’s notable discoveries took place. Her presentation will outline a brief history of the Galapagos, its international importance as a World Heritage Site, the major conservation issues and challenges in the Galapagos, as well as current initiatives to protect the biodiversity of this extraordinary archipelago.
Ms. Barry’s background includes more than 20 years of institutional advancement and organizational development. Ms. Barry has held senior fundraising positions with the World Conservation Union, The Wilderness Society, and Resources for the Future. She also served as a consultant to the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, Henry A. Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture, and the Audubon Naturalist Society. She has served on several nonprofit boards, including the Audubon Naturalist Society, the Support Center of Washington, International Council for Bird Preservation Pan American Section, and Americans for the Environment. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in English from Washington State University and the University of Virginia, respectively.
