Art Exhibition, "Ruminations," on Display at Adelphi University
Garden City, NY
March 4, 2009

Adelphi University is proud to present "Ruminations," an exhibition of abstract paintings by John Anderson on display in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, from Friday, April 3 to Wednesday, April 22, 2009. A free reception will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 6:00 p.m.
John Anderson is a painter of uncommon focus whose experimentation with color, shape, and interval have led him to produce a large and serious corpus of abstract images over the course of three decades. While we usually associate the self-educated artist with personal, sometimes child-like imagery rendered in an idiosyncratic style, Mr. Anderson is a rarity as a self-taught abstract painter.
Mr. Anderson, who was born in 1947, and lived his entire life in Nassau County, has developed his art by studying printed reproductions and reading books and articles on the historical, philosophical, and technical aspects of painting. He specializes in small, densely structured abstractions, usually on paper. Mr. Anderson is preoccupied with color relationships and, in particular, how the material condition of paint (which he makes himself from egg, pigment, and oil) affects the character of those relationships. His work is deceptively simple, but careful inspection reveals a rich variety of visual sensation and intimate beauty.
The Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Richard Vaux, director of exhibitions, at 516.877.4462 or
