High School Journalism Celebrated at Adelphi University's Press Day 2009
---
Garden City, NY
March 11, 2009

---
Adelphi University will host more than 300 high school journalists from 30 schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties for Press Day 2009 on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Adelphi’s Performing Arts Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The keynote address and panel discussion, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is free and open to the public. The event will recognize high school journalists and their school newspaper with the presentation of the Quill Awards in 12 categories, and also provide high school students and novice journalists with the opportunity to hear and learn from distinguished journalists.

The program will feature a keynote address by Ben Smith, senior reporter analyst from Politico.com. He covers politics and writes one of the nation’s most-read political blogs. He covered the Democratic candidates for president in 2007 and 2008, and broke stories ranging from John Edwards’ expensive hair cut to Barack Obama’s effort to beat back rumors about his religious faith to an investigation into Rudy Giuliani’s accounting in New York’s City Hall and growing tensions between Sarah Palin and John McCain. Before joining Politico, Mr. Smith covered New York’s City Hall for the New York Sun and politics for the New York Observer. In 2006, he was a political columnist for the New York Daily News and in 2005 and 2006 started three of New York City’s leading political blogs, The Politicker, The Daily Politics, and Room Eight, for which he still writes occasionally about the New York political scene.

Following Mr. Smith’s talk, a prominent group of journalists will respond and offer their perspectives on this year’s topic, “The New World of New Media.”
