Adelphi University School of Social Work to Honor Sarah Gehlert, Ph.D., 2009 Lodge Prize Recipient

Adelphi University School of Social Work is proud to honor the 2009 Richard Lodge Prize recipient, Dr. Sarah Gehlert at the School’s annual Alumni and Friends Event, on Friday, May 8, 2009. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. in Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The keynote will address the role that stress plays in health disparities as well as implications for social work practice. All practitioners involved in healthcare issues, working with diverse populations, or human service professionals and community leaders who are committed to addressing health disparities are encouraged to attend. The day’s program will include clinical workshops designed to provide models of practice that can be used across fields of practice for all social workers. 

The keynote address, "A Multi-Informative, Multi-Level Approach to Understanding the Role of Stress in Health Disparities: Implications for Social Work Practice," will be delivered by Dr. Gehlert, who is known internationally as a pioneer in health and social work research. Currently, she is the Helen Ross Professor in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. She is president of the Institute of Mind and Biology and the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Disparities Research. Most recently, Dr. Gehlert became the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at Washington University.

Following the keynote, will be the presentation of the 2009 Richard Lodge Prize and Field Educator of the Year Awards, as well as informative clinical workshops and a networking reception. The prize is named for the late Dr. Richard Lodge, a leading social work educator and Adelphi University professor. The prize honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of social work theory.
