Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education to Co-Host "Teaching for Peace and Human Rights" Conference
Garden City, NY
May 13, 2009

The fourth annual conference, “Teaching for Peace and Human Rights,” will run from May 28 through May 29, 2009, and is co-sponsored by the Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education and the United Nations. A number of workshops will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009 in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, New York, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will include speakers, presentations, and a dance performance. On Friday, May 29, 2009, United Nations Headquarters will host the second half of the conference, and attendees will interact through live video with students and teachers from around the globe, with participating representatives from Mexico, Canada, Dominican Republic, India, and Pakistan.
The aim of this event is to encourage international understanding and acceptance through education, and to provide a forum of communication between students and teachers from different countries, all working toward a common goal of peace. By the conclusion of the conference, teachers will draft a Declaration supporting the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World campaign (2001-2010), which provides children in conflict regions with help and positive conditioning toward non-violent action in an effort to avert destructive cycles.
