Adelphi University to Provide Free Childcare to Busy Parents with the Help of Local High School Volunteers
---
Garden City, NY
May 13, 2009

---
The Institute for Parenting at Adelphi University is pleased to introduce the Adelphi University Youth Engaged in Service (AU YES) to Families Program. AU YES to Families is designed to work in conjunction with the Parent Coffee Series’ informational parenting workshops, and will offer free childcare to parents who wish to attend. The goal of this program is to enable parents to have easier access to attend parent education programs. High school students have been encouraged to volunteer in this initiative and in return will receive training on child development. Students will gain hands-on experience and will have the opportunity to volunteer with children of all ages. The AU YES to Families Program is a positive experience for both the students volunteering and the families who can use this positive resource. High School students with an interest in volunteering for the program are invited to call.

The Parent Coffee Series offers a program approximately every other month starting in October and running through June. Experts in the fields of parent education, child development, and other related fields lead discussions on a variety of topics relevant to raising young children and activities. All sessions offer parents a question and answer segment and are one and a half hours in length. On May 14, 2009, there will be a program on early literacy and language development called Story Time Pajama Party which will also include a book reading to children and parents. With summer quickly approaching, there will be a talk on the Importance of Play for Preschoolers on June 4, 2009, that will give parents some ideas for a happy summer. Presentations are led by professionals in the fields being covered, and are an interactive learning experience. The cost of programs in the series is $10 per adult.

For more information about the program and how to participate, please contact Program Director Amy Heinowitz at 516.877.3016 or at aheinowitz@adelphi.edu, or visit http://www.adelphi.edu/parentinginstitute/parentprograms/.
