School of Business Faculty Receive Bender Awards For Their Research

Adelphi University’s School of Business congratulates the winners of the 2009 Bender Research Fellowship Awards. Professor of Accounting C. Richard Baker’s academic work was honored with the Three Year Body of Work Award, while six other refereed journal papers published in 2008 received the Best Paper Awards. About the Winners:

Dr. Ashley of West Islip, NY has been teaching management and decision sciences courses at Adelphi since 1967. The author of three books, more than 20 refereed journal articles and nearly 10 refereed proceedings, he has also written numerous confidential reports for the U.S. Department of Navy. Aside from teaching, Dr. Ashley also serves as consultant to several organizations and as referee for the Journal of Business Ethics and the Journal of Corporate Governance. He received his doctoral degree in operations research and management science from the Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Baker of New York, NY has been teaching for more than 30 years and joined Adelphi’s School of Business in 2005, to teach accounting courses. The author of more than 90 refereed journal articles and refereed proceedings, Professor Baker has published six books and presented papers at more than 80 conferences. Dr. Baker holds a Ph.D. in accounting and organizational behavior from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Hazy of Clinton, NJ joined Adelphi’s School of Business in 2005 to teach business entrepreneurship and management courses. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has been invited to speak at various venues including multi-national corporations and international conferences. Additionally, Dr. Hazy has more than 25 years of senior executive experience and founded a number of start-up businesses. He is founder and C.E.O. of Leadership Science, L.L.C., a research and consulting firm, and founding organizer of the annual International Conference on Social Entrepreneurship and Complexity held at Adelphi. Dr. Hazy earned his Ph.D. in leadership, organization theory, and human resource development from The George Washington University.

Dr. Silberstang of East Norwich, NY has been teaching business management and communications courses at Adelphi since 2005. Previously, she served in various non-academic roles including president of Organizational Consulting Services in Washington, D.C., vice president of training and development at Fields Consulting Group in Fairfax, VA, and director of organizational development services at Burgess Levin & Company in Sterling, VA. Dr. Silberstang holds a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from The George Washington University.

Dr. Torras of Brooklyn, NY has been teaching courses in economics at Adelphi for 10 years and is a founding member, chief administrator, treasurer, and trustee of Brooklyn Free School, Inc. The author of 20 refereed journal articles and several books and book chapters, Dr. Torras has given more than 30 conference presentations and has been featured by various media outlets. He holds a doctoral degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dr. Yang of West Hempstead, NY has been teaching management courses at Adelphi’s School of Business since 2003. She previously served as a human resource specialist and as a human resource consultant for two companies in Taiwan. Additionally, Dr. Yang is the author of two book chapters, five refereed journal articles, and more than 20 presentations. She earned a doctoral degree in organizational behavior from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Prottas of New York, NY has been teaching management and human resources courses at Adelphi’s School of Business since 2005. The author of three books and book chapters, and nearly 15 refereed journal articles, he has presented more than 20 papers at various conferences. Prior to teaching, he spent two decades in financial services as a commercial and investment banker. Dr. Prottas holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior and human resource management from City University of New York.

The Bender Awards are named for James Bender, founding dean of Adelphi University School of Business. Dean Bender was associated with Adelphi for more than 25 years in various capacities, and bestowed a generous endowment upon the University to fund the awards. The two categories of the Bender Award are the Three Year Body of Work Award and the Best Paper Award, for which full-time faculty in the School of Business are eligible to submit papers for review. The entries are judged for quality of writing and potential to make an impact on the discipline.
