Garden City, NY
July 6, 2009

Esther Goodcuff B.S. ’74, M.A. ’77, Adelphi University’s associate vice president for enrollment management and student affairs, was selected as this year’s recipient of the Nassau Counselors’ Association (NCA) College Counselor of the Year Award. She plays a critical role in counseling Adelphi students and overseeing services related to admissions, financial aid, student life, and career paths.

Due to her ability to build consensus and confidence in her staff and volunteers, both at Adelphi and at the NCA, Ms. Goodcuff has achieved numerous significant results. She initiated the Transfer Initiatives Committee, which offers an easy transition to incoming transfer students, by providing them with counseling and support services. To recognize her dedication towards student success, the University’s Student Government Association honored her with the 2008 Woman of the Year award.

In addition to her service at Adelphi, Ms. Goodcuff’s tenure at NCA began as co-chair of the Counselors, Administrators, Parents (CAP) conference, hosted annually at Adelphi, progressed through several elected positions, and culminated with her presidency of the NCA between 2002 and 2003. During this time, Ms. Goodcuff worked on developing NCA’s financial base, which enables the organization to recognize all the award winners with annual scholarship. She also promoted and oversaw the development of NCA’s Web site, which enhances and promotes information to local counseling communities. Even though her responsibilities at Adelphi have increased over time, Ms. Goodcuff has continued her membership in NCA and mentored her new staff to ensure that the organization maintains its high professional standards.

The NCA College Counselor of the Year Award was created to acknowledge the achievements of college counselors who have demonstrated initiatives in the advancement of the profession, with outstanding personal and professional qualities, such as a history of leadership, mentoring, and professional development.
