Adelphi University Congratulates Adam Holtzer ’09 on Major of the Year Award
Garden City, NY
July 31, 2009

Adelphi University congratulates physical education major Adam Holtzer ’09 on winning the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (NYS AHPERD) 2009 Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major of the Year Award. He will receive the distinction at the 72nd annual NYS AHPERD Conference on Friday, November 20, 2009, at the Turning Stone Conference Center in Verona, NY.
Mr. Holtzer’s dedication to his major stems from a longstanding affinity for physical education classes in school. He credits that class time with allowing him to better acquaint himself with peers and hone his leadership skills. Mr. Holtzer’s natural flair for teaching is evident, as he has helped classmates master skills needed for games and sports. He also takes what he learns and applies it to life, including traits such as leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork; all of which he hopes to instill in future students.
“I want to make a difference by teaching students at young ages the benefits of being physically active and living a healthy lifestyle,” said Adelphi student Adam Holtzer. “Physical activity is not only good for the body, but it is good for the mind, body, and soul.”
With activities extending beyond the realm of physical education, Mr. Holtzer manages his time between numerous other pursuits, including his role as vice president of the physical education and health majors club, and being a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, student government association, outdoor and recreation club, and men’s volleyball team at Adelphi. In addition, he is an orientation leader and peer assistant leader to incoming freshman at the University, and volunteers his time with other outside organizations in the community, including his local synagogue.
Balancing such a rigorous schedule is no simple task; however Mr. Holtzer is able to do so while maintaining a high 3.8 GPA. Following his graduation in December, the fitness-inclined scholar plans to continue his busy curriculum.
“While continuing my education I hope to find a job on Long Island as a physical education teacher, where I can start my journey to teach students how to be physically active for life,” said Mr. Holtzer. “I hope to eventually
study the epidemic of obesity in our community.”
Mr. Holtzer is proud to represent Adelphi and New York State, as he receives the recognition of the Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major of the Year Award from NYS AHPERD. He attributes his success to the support he’s received from family and friends, and the quality of education he has received at the University, which has been instrumental to his growth as an educator.
NYS AHPERD encourages all of the universities in New York to annually nominate one male, and one female student of the representative majors who exemplify scholarship, community service, and commitment to their intended professions. Adelphi students continue to take home New York honors, with approximately 15 wins to date. Winners from the state then go on to compete against representatives from across the Eastern region; if chosen, they become one of six national winners in the United States. Adelphi is proud to see Mr. Holtzer represent New York through his outstanding scholastic and community achievement, and wishes him continued success in all future endeavors.
