Garden City, NY
August 14, 2009

Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Dr. Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize co-recipient and president of Rockefeller University, as he delivers the annual Dakin Memorial Lecture. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in Adelphi’s Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. This is a free event, open to the public.
Performing extensive research in the United Kingdom, Dr. Nurse has a primary focus on cell division and cell shape. This work has led him to identify a key regulator molecule that functions in cellular reproduction, which has vast implications in understanding the growth and development of cancer cells. Dr. Nurse has made numerous contributions to the field as head of Cancer Research UK, the largest volunteer-supported cancer research organization in the world.
Dr. Nurse was knighted in 1999 for his outstanding research in cytology, and received the Albert Lasker Award for basic medical research, as well as the 2001 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. A fellow of the Royal Society, Dr. Nurse is also a foreign associate of the U.S. Academy of Sciences.
The Dakin Memorial Lecture is an endowed lectureship, which celebrates the work and achievements of Henry Drysdale Dakin and aims to inspire embryologists to emulate the splendid example he set during his lifetime.
